The "Ryuu" in (Ryuu)en isn't really spelled as "dragon" (龍・竜；りゅう） but as "willow" (柳； read as やなぎ if stand alone）.
But then, people always mistake his name being connected to a dragon, which kind of shows at his "outer" personality. But inside... well. "Weeping Willow"
His full name is spelled with Ryuu(柳；りゅう；Willow）and En(縁；えん；relation). It originally came from Riyuu(理由) meaning reason, but was shorten to "Ryuu" due to pronounciation.
Ryuuen is also Nuriko's real name in Fushigi Yuugi (Chou Ryuuen). And yes. That's actually where that came from. He's like that manliest man in that anime. Hahaha. (Nuriko's seishi name was written as 柳宿; he's not a fan character though.)
